Driving Licence: Monaco Introduces a New Format

From 4 July 2026, the Principality is introducing a new bank card-format driving licence, designed to be more practical for everyday use, more secure, more durable and fully compliant with international standards. This new model will progressively replace the current driving licence, which will remain valid for several years. Both formats will coexist during this transitional period. Holders of the current-format driving licence therefore have no immediate action to take.

From 4 July 2026, the Principality is introducing a new bank card-format driving licence, designed to be more practical for everyday use, more secure, more durable and fully compliant with international standards. This new model will progressively replace the current driving licence, which will remain valid for several years. Both formats will coexist during this transitional period. Holders of the current-format driving licence therefore have no immediate action to take.

More compact than the current model, the new driving licence is manufactured from a recyclable material. It also incorporates numerous advanced security features, including, on the reverse, a visible digital certificate enabling its authenticity to be verified quickly during roadside checks.

Another important change is that the licence card will now have to be renewed every fifteen years, as is already the case for passports and national identity cards. This is a purely administrative procedure intended to update the holder's photograph; no new driving test or examination will be required. The fee remains unchanged at €23 (2026 rate), whether for a first issue or a renewal.

To support this change, a new online driving licence renewal service is now available on the monguichet.mc platform. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, this online service enables users to complete the entire renewal procedure remotely, simply and securely, without the need to travel in most cases. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office encourages users to make use of this new digital service, developed to simplify administrative procedures and reduce processing times.

Designed to provide a smoother and more intuitive user experience, the online service includes the electronic submission of the applicant's identity photograph, together with a handwritten signature capture facility that can be completed directly on a touchscreen or by scanning a QR code. 

Led by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office, in close cooperation with the Digital Services Department and the Information Systems Department, the project also includes the modernisation of the Office's information system, paving the way for further digital developments. It also illustrates the Prince's Government's ongoing commitment to delivering public services that are ever simpler, more accessible and more innovative.
