Due to new EU rules, Monegasque citizens and residents using their digital identity may need to update their certificates before 3 December 2025. Read on to find out whether this concerns you.
Since 2021, the national identity card or residence permit contains two electronic certificates that enable Monegasque citizens and residents to use their digital identity securely.
These electronic certificates are as follows:
- An authentication certificate, enabling you to use MConnect to authenticate yourself on compatible online services
- An electronic signature certificate, enabling you to sign digital documents
These certificates have a maximum lifetime of 3 years from the date of issue of your card.
Therefore If your card is valid for more than 3 years, you will need to renew your certificates before they expire with an interactive terminal in order to continue using MConnect services.
Understanding the process
Was your card issued before 3 December 2025?
Compare the expiration date of your certificates with the expiration date of your card.
Look at the front (obverse) side of your national identity card
or residence permit
You can find dedicated terminals at the Maison du numérique and also at Monaco City Hall or Police Department.
Take your identity card or residence permit to the Maison du numérique before 1 December 2025, along with your mobile phone, to update your certificates (valid for three years).
Please note that after that date, you will no longer be able to renew your digital certificates, although you will still be able to use them until they expire.
After your certificates have expired, you will no longer be able to use your digital identity and will need to replace your identity card at City Hall or the Police Department if you are a resident.
So remember to renew your Identity card / residence permit before your certificates’ new expiration date.
