As Europe's top athletes battle it at the European Athletics Championships in Rome, five world champions have already confirmed their attendance at the upcoming games in Monaco on 12 July, just two weeks ahead of the opening of the Paris Games. Here's a rundown of the line-up.
Conveniently held just two weeks ahead of the Paris Games, the Meeting Herculis EBS provides a golden opportunity for athletes to fine-tune their performance and make their final preparations before hitting the track. Five world champions have confirmed their places on the Louis II Stadium circuit on 12 July.
Men's 110m hurdles:
American competitor Grant Holloway fondly remembers his appearance at the Meeting Herculis EBS in 2022. The three-time world champion won the race in a season's best time of 12.99 (+0.6m/s). "I can't wait to be back in Monaco, on a track where I have so many fond memories, it's always a pleasure to be here." he states. This season, Holloway has clocked a time of 13.03 (-0.1m/s); with the meeting record within his grasp, he'll be keeping a close eye on the time.
Meeting record: 12.92 (0.0) - Aries Merritt (USA) - 20 July 2012 World best performance of the year: 13.03 (-0.1m/s) - Grant Holloway (USA) - 25 May in Eugene (USA).
Men's 200m:
Many of the athletes have a deep affection for the Meeting Herculis EBS. Among them is American sprinter Noah Lyles, the three-time world champion has already raced four times on the Louis II stadium track, coming away with a win in 2022 by a wide margin, taking the meeting record to 19.46 over 200m.
This season, he clocked 19.77 with a strong headwind, so it's looking promising for his upcoming races in Monaco.
Meeting record: 19''46 (+0.8m/s) - Noah Lyles (USA) – 10 August 2022 World best performance of the year: 19''67 (+1,7m/s) - Kenneth Bednarek (USA) - 10 May in Doha (QAT).
Women's Pole Vault:
Katie Moon's last appearance in Monaco in 2021 saw her clear the bar at 4.90m. She's since built up an impressive record of achievements, including an Olympic title in Tokyo and two consecutive World Championship titles, cementing her leadership in the discipline. Having jumped the highest this summer, Katie heads to Monaco this year, set to defend her position and fine-tune her technique in preparation for this summer's main event.
Meeting record: 5m04 – Yelena Isinbayeva (RUS) – 29 July 2008 World best performance of the year: 4m86 - Molly Caudery (GBR) - 24 February in Rouen (FRA).
Men's 800m:
The first time Marco Arop took to the Louis II Stadium track, in 2020, he beat his personal best, going on to do so again the following year with a time of 1:43.26.
Can he do it again this year? The Canadian runner is in good form, clocking an impressive 1:43.61 on his Wanda Diamond League debut in Xiamen. There's every reason to expect another record time on a track that he’s proven success on.
Meeting record: 1'41''98 - Nijel Amos (BOT) – 12 July 2019 World best performance of the year: 1'43''23 - Djamel Sedjati (ALG) - 2 June in Stockholm (SWE).
Women's Javelin:
Japan's Haruka Kitaguchi, winner of the Budapest Games last summer, has set the world benchmark in javelin competition. Since her arrival on the scene, Haruka has scooped seven Wanda Diamond League victories, including at last year's final in Eugene. Boasting an impressive throw of 67.38m, she'll be determined to succeed in Monaco, on this familiar track where she took second place in 2022, to hopefully reclaim her place in the world record books this season (currently at 63.45m).
Meeting record: 69m45 – Barbora Špotáková (CZE) – 22 July 2011 World best performance of the year: 66m70 - Flor Denis Ruiz Hurtado (COL) - 12 May in Cuiaba (BRA).
