Stamps to go on sale on 19 October 2012

Monaco’s Stamp Issuing Office will release the following stamps for sale on 19 October 2012:

€1.45 – CENTENARY OF THE CONSECRATION OF SAINT CHARLES CHURCH

2012 marks the centenary of the consecration of Saint Charles Church in Monte Carlo. Dedicated to its Patron Saint, Charles Borromée, the church was completed and opened for services on Easter Monday, 26 March 1883, and was later elevated to the status of a parish church on 15 March 1887. It was consecrated on 9 November 1912 by Monseigneur Jean-Charles Arnal du Curel, second Bishop of Monaco. The stamp depicts the church’s 30-metre-tall bell tower.

€2.35 – 150th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF AUGUSTE LUMIÈRE

Born in Besançon in 1862, Auguste Lumière, along with his brother Louis, invented the cinematograph. Their first film, La Sortie des Usines Lumière (Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory) was screened in Paris in 1895. The Lumière brothers also played a key role in the field of photography, developing the first industrial colour photography process, the autochrome.

€ 3.78 – CENTENARY OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE NEFERTITI BUST

The Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten, Nefertiti, owes part of her fame to her beauty, which was immortalised in the 14th century BC by a painted limestone bust. The sculpture was discovered in 1912 in Amarna by a team of German archaeologists. Today, the sculpture is on display at the Neues Museum in Berlin.

These stamps will be on sale at the Stamp Issuing Office, at the Museum of Philately and Coinage, at the Principality’s post offices and philatelic counters, and from Monégasque stamp traders and some philatelic sellers in France. They will be available to our subscribers and customers, together with other treasures from the philately programme of the second half of 2012.
