The Pelagos Sanctuary dives into the metaverse
Under constant pressure from human activity, the Pelagos Sanctuary is counting on new technologies to reach and involve a wider public.
Monaco, 15 March 2024 - The Pelagos Agreement, a tripartite pact between France, Italy, and Monaco, aimed at protecting marine mammals in the Pelagos Sanctuary, is entering the digital arena through Monaco's Metaverse.
It's a pioneering initiative to create an immersive, educational, and entertaining experience that will appeal to younger audiences particularly about the importance of protecting marine mammals.
Using innovative technologies and interactive storytelling, users will embark on an immersive virtual journey between Nice, Monaco and Genoa to explore the diversity of marine life that thrives in the Pelagos Sanctuary and learn about the challenges faced each day.
The Pelagos Agreement is particularly focused on communication and awareness-raising initiatives, and Dworld's ambitious metaverse project ties in perfectly with our objectives of raising awareness among future generations of the need to conserve the Sanctuary and protect its inhabitants. This area belongs to us all, and each one of us can and must contribute to preserving it, but to do so, we need to be aware of it.
This innovative project will be unveiled at the prestigious “Monaco Ocean Week”, dedicated to the protection and conservation of the oceans.
The educational material will soon be available on the Pelagos Agreement website and will also be presented in schools, giving pupils in Monaco and around the world access to this immersive learning experience.
The Monaco Metaverse offers a unique opportunity to transcend geographical borders, create new opportunities for collaboration between Monegasque entities and engage the public in a meaningful way. Through this collaboration we aim to inspire future generations to become passionate advocates of marine conservation.
The Pelagos Sanctuary's integration into the Monaco metaverse is a bold step towards harnessing technology to promote environmental education and create a deeper, more sustainable connection with our natural world, which faces increasingly pressing environmental challenges.
These initiatives are a testament to the importance of collective action and innovation in preserving our planet's precious wildlife and resources.

On 25 November 1999, the Pelagos Agreement was signed in Rome by France, Italy and the Principality of Monaco. Entered into force on 21 February 2002, with the primary aim of harmonising action and management measures to protect cetaceans and their habitats from human induced disturbance and mortality (pollution, noise, accidents).
Dworld "a metaverse made in Monaco", the Monegasque company is creating interoperable virtual 'twins' of countries or cities (starting with Monaco) to offer greener, smarter, and more futuristic versions of these places.
