Understanding the process
Monaco’s Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) has the objective of providing young British citizens with the opportunity to experience life in Monaco. The scheme is quota-based and operates on a reciprocal basis.
Eligibility requirements
You can apply for a Youth Mobility Scheme certificate if you:
- Are aged 18 to 30
- Are a British citizen, habitually resident in the United Kingdom or who can produce a valid Monegasque residence permit
- Have at least 2000 € in savings
- Want to live and work in Monaco for up to 12 months
You can’t apply if you have:
- children who live with you
- children you’re financially responsible for
- already been in Monaco under the scheme
The YMS status is only granted on an individual basis: spouses or partners of YMS participants wishing to live in the Principality have to qualify independently to participate in the scheme or otherwise meet the regulations in force relating to the residency of foreigners.
Works you can do
You are free to do whatever work you like in the Principality during the period of validity of the YMS certificate, except for:
- self-employment
- working as a professional sportsperson (including a sports coach)
- working for the Monegasque civil service or for the town council
- working as a doctor in training
However, no individual job or work experience placement may exceed six months in duration. Employers need to submit copies of YMS certificates to the Employment Office to notify them when they accept YMS participants.
YMS certificate holders may also engage in privately-funded studies, voluntary work (in compliance with Monaco’s laws, directives and regulations) and au pair placements as they wish.
The YMS candidate must make his/her own research for finding work experience placements and/or individual jobs in the Principality. Participants are not required to work and work is not guaranteed for them.
YMS Quota
Up to 1000 YMS certificates are granted for each calendar year. Once the quota has been filled no further applications are accepted or granted until the next year of the Scheme.

British citizens who want to stay in Monaco for more than 90 days require a "long-stay for Monaco" visa from the French Authorities. Please note that this procedure can take up to 4 months. British citizens participating in the YMS do not require the Monegasque employer to request authorisation from the Employment Office.
They must however inform the Employment Office that they have accepted a participant in the YMS for a job or internship, and provide the following documents:
- A copy of the employment contract which needs to include:
- Details of both the YMS participant and the employer concerned
- Details of the financial remuneration involved
- Confirmation of the duration of the employment, which must not exceed six months
- The YMS participant’s certificate of agreement for social security cover or for a private insurance
- A copy of the YMS certificate
- A copy of the internship agreement which needs to include:
- Details of both the YMS participant and the employer concerned
- Details of the main purpose of the internship
- Details of any agreed financial compensation, if applicable
- Confirmation of the duration of the internship, which must not exceed six months
- The YMS participant’s certificate of agreement for social security cover or for a private insurance
