Principle

On 23rd May 2003, the ICAO presented an outline plan for including biometric information in passports.

Using these documents will help to increase the security of border controls and speed up procedures.

The International Civil Aviation Authority's "ICAO MRTD" standard for Machine Readable Travel Documents covers the issuing and management of keys for the components in electronic passports.

Within this framework, governments will provide electronic certificates on a regular basis through the intermediary of their certifying body, the Country Signer Certificate Authority (CSCA).
