Understanding the process
The driving licence for categories AM, A1, A2, A, B1 and B is valid until the age of 70, unless there are medical contraindications. It can be renewed for a maximum period of 5 years on presentation of a medical certificate.
The driving licence for categories in the BE, C, D, CE, DE heavy vehicles group and for persons with a physical disability that necessitates adaptations to the controls of the vehicle has a limited validity of:
- 5 years until age 45
- 3 years from age 45 to 55
- 2 years from age 55 to 60
- 1 year after age 60
It may be renewed for the above-mentioned periods on presentation of a medical certificate.
Requests for renewal of a driving licence may be made before or afterwards its expiry date. However, once it has expired, you will no longer be permitted to drive.

Code P3The request for renewal a driving licence must be sent to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office using a medical certificate dated within the past 3 months, issued by a doctor in the Principality of Monaco who is authorised to conduct medical examinations to determine fitness to drive a land vehicle.
The form may be:

- Collected from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office
Any request must be accompanied by the following documents:
- For Monegasque nationals:
- A copy of a valid Monaco national identity card
- Or a copy of a national passport with proof of address (gas or electricity bill from the SMEG, rental agreement)
- For residents: a copy of a valid residence permit
- The original of your driving licence
- Two recent, coloured ID photos, dated within the last 6 months, on a light background, frontal view, bareheaded, of size 35x45, not scanned (one photo is for the medical certificate and must be covered by the doctor’s signature)
- A medical certificate issued within the past 3 months by a doctor in the Principality of Monaco who is authorised to conduct this medical examination, in accordance with the model provided for that purpose:
- The payment, to be made by cash, cheque or postal order (clearable in Monaco or France), made out to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office or Visa or Mastercard bank cards only, in accordance with the current fee schedule
Any administrative procedure undertaken at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office by a third party must be accompanied by a mandate signed by the principal and by supporting documents showing proof of these persons' identities.
The mandate allows the representative to submit and track the progress of the principal’s application, but not to sign documents instead of the principal.
To submit your application, you must first make an appointment with an agent of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.

The staff of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office will be waiting for you at the time of the appointment; you should bring with you the documents listed in steps 1 and 2 and your preferred means of payment.

The new driving licence will be available within 72 hours by appointment arranged by the customer manager at the end of the interview and on presentation of the payment receipt (invoice).
