The driving licence, of whatever category, has time-limited validity. It should therefore be renewed regularly at the Driver And Vehicle Licensing Office.
Understanding the process
The driving licence for categories AM, A1, A2, A, B1 and B is valid until the age of 70, unless there are medical contraindications. It can be renewed for a maximum period of 5 years on presentation of a medical certificate.
The driving licence for categories in the BE, C, D, CE, DE heavy vehicles group and for persons with a physical disability that necessitates adaptations to the controls of the vehicle has a limited validity of:
- 5 years until age 45
- 3 years from age 45 to 55
- 2 years from age 55 to 60
- 1 year after age 60
It may be renewed for the above-mentioned periods on presentation of a medical certificate.
The validity of the driving licence is extended to start from the date of the medical examination. The period is set by the authorised doctor.
Requests for renewal of a driving licence may be made before or afterwards its expiry date. Licences that are still valid upon presentation to the office can be kept for 15 days until a new licence is received. However, once it has expired, you will no longer be permitted to drive.
Please note: if you hold a category A1 licence obtained before 15 June 2015, this category will not be transferred to the renewed licence. You have until 15 June 2021 to validate this category, either on the basis of a test or an insurance certificate.
However, if you have held a category B licence for more than two years, you are authorised to drive a light motorbike (A1), but only within Monaco.
There is a fee associated with this service - Please see
