Please find below an FAQ containing questions and answers relating to technical inspection of vehicles in Monaco.
A vehicle (or trailer) weighing up to 3.5 tonnes must undergo a technical inspection four years after the date of first entry into service, and then every three years thereafter until the vehicle reaches thirty years of age, after which an annual technical inspection will be required. However, light passenger transport vehicles, taxis and chauffeur-driven vehicles must undergo a technical inspection one year after the date of first entry into service, and then every year thereafter.
A vehicle (or trailer) weighing more than 3.5 tonnes must undergo a technical inspection one year after the date of first entry into service, and then every year thereafter. Furthermore, "coach or bus" style passenger transport vehicles must be brought in for inspection prior to registration, and every six months after their first entry into service.
No, trailers under 750 kilograms registered under the same registration number as the towing vehicle do not have to undergo a technical inspection.
No, motorbikes, tricycles, mopeds, motor quadricycles or similar vehicles registered in the Principality of Monaco do not have to undergo a technical inspection. If a vehicle older than five years is registered in the Principality and sold to a French resident, the buyer must present an official technical inspection report completed in France in order to apply for registration with the French authorities.
No, the vehicle owner or authorised representative must pay for the technical inspection upon booking the appointment. Appointments can be made online, in person at the reception desk of the Vehicle Testing Centre, or by post, together with the relevant payment.
Yes, a third party may take a vehicle for a regular technical inspection on behalf of the vehicle owner. They should arrive at the reception desk of the Vehicle Testing Centre on the day of the appointment at the scheduled time, accompanied by the original registration certificate, the appointment form, and any other relevant documents.
Yes, the original registration certificate must be produced at the scheduled technical inspection. Staff inspecting the vehicle will affix a stamp bearing the due date of the next technical inspection to box "X1".
No, a technical inspection carried out at the Monaco Vehicle Testing Centre is not recognised in France. As a result, if a vehicle registered in the Principality is sold to a French resident, the buyer will have to provide an official technical inspection report completed in France in order to apply for registration with the French authorities.
The due date for the technical inspection is shown in box "X1" on the inside of the Monegasque registration certificate before the first regular technical inspection, and on the stamp affixed to the outside of the certificate after each technical inspection. It can also be found on the last technical inspection report, on the left-hand side, in the box labelled "Limite de validité du contrôle technique" (technical inspection validity period).
