To protect wildlife from commercial overexploitation, which is partly responsible for the decline in global biodiversity, a Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, better known by its acronym CITES, was signed in Washington on 3 March 1973, and entered into force on 1 July 1975.
