In the event of the death of the owner of a vehicle that is registered in the Principality of Monaco, the registration may be maintained in that person's name for a maximum period of six months from the date of the person's death.
Understanding the process
During this period, the heir(s) designated by the notarial deed are invited to carry out the formalities relating to transfer of ownership of the vehicle. They may keep, sell or destroy the vehicle in accordance with the terms of the deed. In the case of multiple heirs, written consent from each of them is required before any steps are taken.
In the event of the expiration of registration before the end of the full term of the aforesaid period, renewal of the registration may be requested for the remaining period in accordance with the terms and conditions set out on the factsheet: How to renew your annual car sticker)Similarly, if the validity of the technical inspection expires before the expiration of the aforesaid time period, this must be undertaken, in accordance with the procedures set out in the file: Technical inspection of vehicules
If the transfer of ownership has not been established at the end of this six-month period, for whatever reasons, registration of the vehicle will be suspended from the register of registrations. The certificate and number plates must be returned and the vehicle will no longer be authorised to be driven on the public highway. The heirs may, if they wish, pending finalisation of the inheritance arrangements, and provided they are resident in the Principality, apply for registration in the names of the joint heirs, formalised by a notarial deed. The word "hoirie" (inheritance), accompanied by the surname of the deceased, is then entered on the registration certificate.
There is a fee associated with this service - Please see
