From 13 January 2025, gardeners from the Department of Urban Amenities (DAU) are about to start the annual harvest of the Principality's bitter orange trees.

In 2024, the Principality has 1,111 citrus trees (orange, lemon, clementine, etc.), including 516 untreated bitter orange trees.

Each year, in January and February, DAU gardeners prune the various fruit trees and pick the bigarades (bitter oranges) that grow on the trees lining the various streets of the Condamine, Moneghetti and Monte-Carlo districts.

Anyone wishing to pick bigarades during this annual harvest should contact the gardeners on site.

In 2024, 11.14 tonnes were harvested, of which 4.45 tonnes were distributed free of charge to the local population and to the Lycée Rainier III for processing into jam and fruit paste.

Gardeners will be picking the bitter oranges according to the following schedule (from 8am to 2.30pm, subject to weather conditions and harvest progress):

  • Condamine area:
    • From 13 to 24 January: Rue Princesse Caroline
    • From 28 January to 7 February: Rue Grimaldi
  • Moneghetti area:
    • From 20 to 31 January: Boulevard de Belgique
  • Monte-Carlo area:
    • From 13 to 17 January: Avenue de Grande Bretagne
    • From 20 to 24 January: Boulevard d'Italie

New this year: come and check out the “On the Citrus Route” exhibition on Rue Princesse Caroline, running for your enjoyment until February 2025!
