NEWS RELEASE

Monaco Statistics (IMSEE) has published the initial results of the 2023 Population Census using a new calculation method now based on registers.

The introduction of this new calculation method has therefore created a break in series: results from previous years obtained by annual updates, are now incomparable.

Thanks to this new method of calculation, the number of inhabitants and homes, along with their main characteristics, are now available annually and on a long-term basis. The method can be used to calculate changes to each of these data categories every year without having to conduct a thorough census every eight years, as was the case before.

On this new basis, the resident population is 38,367 people as of 31/12/2023.

It breaks down as follows:

recensement population

The total resident population was calculated using different registers from the following administrative sources:

  • Monaco City Hall, for Monegasque nationals and births in Monaco
  • The Police Department, for foreign residents of adult age (residence permit data)
  • The Department of Education, Youth and Sport, for foreigners aged from 3 to 17 who attend school in Monaco

The remaining population, including foreign minors aged 3 to 17 who are not attending school in the Principality, and foreign children born outside Monaco between 2021 and 2023 is estimated using 2016 Census data, but this share represents only 2% of the total. Since the 2016 general census, the population has grown by 2.8%.

Monaco Statistics will present more detailed statistics (including gender, the age pyramid, nationalities) in the first half of 2024.
