Understanding the process
All children aged six to sixteen who are Monegasque nationals or living in Monaco must be enrolled in a state or private school in the Principality (Act no 1.334 of 12 July 2007).
For the first part of their secondary education, children attend a collège.
For pupils who are Monegasque nationals or whose parents are legally resident in Monaco, and who are applying to enrol in the Principality for the first time.
For pupils enrolled in CM2 (Year 6) in a Monegasque school.
In other cases, a request for exemption is required from the Department of Education, Youth and Sport (DENJS). The procedure can be done between 1 January and 15 May 2024.
If your child will be joining the 6ème (Year 7), 5ème (Year 8), 4ème (Year 9) or 3ème (Year 10) you can choose between:
- State education
- Private education under contract
- Private education that is not under contract (International School of Monaco)
If your child is enrolled in a school outside the Principality or is homeschooled, you are required to inform the Director of the Department of Education, Youth and Sport by submitting a declaration.
The declaration should state the surname(s), first name(s) and date of birth of your child, their address and the details of the school in which they are enrolled.
Any breach of this obligation is subject to criminal prosecution. You will be subject to the modalities and control as indicated in the article of 5 of the Act no. 1.334 of 12 July 2007 concerning education
