The enrolment period for nursery school in public and private schools for the 2025-2026 school year will take place on the following dates:
In state schools: from Monday 6 January to Friday 21 March 2025 inclusive
In private schools: from Monday 13 January to Friday 28 March 2025 inclusive
Nursery schools (écoles maternelles) accept children who are too young for compulsory education. Children of three years of age and over, or children who have reached this age during the first quarter of the school year, and children aged four to five, can attend nursery school.

Understanding the process
Nursery school is not compulsory.
All Monegasque children, or children with at least one Monegasque parent, can be enrolled on request in a state nursery school or private nursery schools under contract. Non-Monegasque children whose parents live in the Principality will be admitted if places are available.
In other cases, a request for exemption is required from the Department of Education, Youth and Sport (DENJS). The procedure can be done between 1 January and 15 May 2025.
You can choose between:
- State education
- Private education under contract
- Private education that is not under contract (International School of Monaco - British School of Monaco)
In the state sector, the school your child will attend depends on the geographical area in which you live. If you wish your child to attend a school in a different area, you should send a letter to the Department of Education, Youth and Sport before 1st May, requesting an area exemption.
While awaiting a reply, you should enrol your child in the school in your area.

Collating the documents
Depending on your circumstances, you may be asked to provide the following supporting documents:
- A photocopy of your family record booklet or a birth certificate showing proof of parentage
- A photocopy of the vaccination record book
- A certificate of civil liability insurance, mentioning the name of the child (optional)
- For divorced parents: the divorce ruling (translated into French if necessary) and any official document that sets out the child’s living arrangements
- For parents who are separated: a copy of any official document that sets out the child’s living arrangements. If you do not have an official document, you should provide a photocopy of a family allowance statement and/or a photocopy of your social insurance card
- School results for the current year (termly reports, etc.)
- At the end of the school year, for all new enrolments, a certificate of deregistration from the child's previous school, mentioning the decision of the Class Council, with the exception of children who do not yet attend school
- A proof of identity of the legal guardian(s) (identity card, passport)
- A residence certificate if the residence permit is dated more than six months old or a photocopy of the residence permit if it dated less than six months old
- A proof of identity of the legal guardian(s) (foreign identity card, passport)
NOTE: The documents listed above are a vital part of the child’s school records and must be provided before their enrolment can be confirmed.
Important recommendation: In allocating available places at primary schools, priority will be given to children living in the relevant area, whether they are Monegasque nationals or residents, whose enrolment application has been received by the required deadline.
